Fleas, Ticks and Worms

We stock a range of flea, worm and tick treatments and can discuss which are most appropriate for your pet's needs.

Spot on type flea products should be applied monthly to be most effective in preventing an infestation.   Over the last couple of years a very long acting and very effective flea collar has been launched, and there is now an oral product a single dose of  which will prevent fleas for 3 months. Should your pet suffer from fleas we can advise on treating you pet and, if necessary, your home.

Ticks are a common and growing problem in dogs.  Many of the prescription only flea products available for dogs will also kill or prevent ticks. Should your dog suffer from ticks we can remove them for you and advise on prevention.  Please do not attempt to remove a tick yourself except with a tick remover tool. These are available from reception, and are far more effective and safer than some of the methods you may find recommended online which can actually increase the chances of disease transmission  and lead to further problems such as the tick's head being left embedded in the skin.

Worms are a problem both to the dogs that have them and potentially to their owners too!  Illness in people caused by roundworms (toxocariasis) is an unpleasant and underdiagnosed problem with children aged between 2 and 4 most at risk.  In some areas of the UK a tapeworm (echnococcus granulosus) is found which can lead to serious illness in people.  For these reasons regular worm treatment and picking up your dog's faeces are all part and parcel of responsible dog ownership.  Young dogs are particularly vulnerable to roundworms and so should be wormed monthly until the age of six months, all dogs over this age should be wormed every 3 months throughout adult life

We can also advise you on the best diets and target weights for your pets. Free nurse weight clinics help keep pets in shape.
If at anytime you are concerned about the health of your dog, please contact us,

Insurance

We recommend insurance for all pets and deal with a range of insurers. 4 weeks free insurance from Petplan is included with our kitten vaccination course.  Unexpected illness and injury to a pet can leave you facing the prospect of a large bill, an insurance policy can provide peace of mind by putting you in a position to do the best for your pet without having to make financial sacrifices elsewhere.

Pet Passports

The Pet Travel Scheme allows you to travel with your dog within the EU and to certain other countries and return without the need for quarantine.  We can vaccinate your dog against rabies and arrange a Pet Passport for you.  We can also help with the export of your animals to countries such as Australia should you be planning to emigrate, please be aware that the export process can take several months so it is best to contact us sooner rather than later should you be considering a new life in the sun!
